I saw this photo on social media yesterday, and it inspired me to share something about decisions — whether they’re right or wrong.
In Australia, there’s a children’s television program called Play School on the ABC. Each episode featured this image and asked the question, “Which window will we choose today?” Behind each window was an opportunity to explore and learn about the world.
For many of us, this was also the moment we began learning that we didn’t really make decisions for ourselves — someone else did. The host chose the window.
Our parents chose the clothes we wore, the food we ate, and much more.
This often sets people up for uncertainty — not knowing how to make a decision for themselves.
Decision-making isn’t something that’s typically taught in schools. When you ask people, “What do you want?” the common response is, “I don’t know.” I call this a brain fart — it’s not that you don’t know; it’s that you’re not actually thinking.
Making a decision requires thought.
And a lot of the time, fear gets in the way.
What will people think?
What if I make the wrong choice?
What if I let someone down?
But really, the only question you need to ask yourself when it comes to making a decision is:
Is this what I want?
The how will take care of itself.
If you’re not making decisions for yourself, the only person you’re letting down is you.
Stop pushing yourself aside. Think about this today. Connect with what you truly want — and give yourself permission to go after it.
Wishing you a fantastic week ahead.
